Week 1 Blog Post 1 1/14/2022
During our discussion times, I realized that not everyone has the same definition of family. For example, I had wrote down that family is essentially a group of one or more individuals who share a bond whether it be with parents, guardians, caregivers, friends, etc. But my group members were more thought out including that family does not have to be biological and that blended families exist. I do believe that family comes in all different forms and shapes. I realized this when everyone shared their insight. It was good for me to not forget about the blended families as society only sees one type of "family" which would be the standard nuclear family. Mom, dad, and children. My group discussed it would be good for everyone to have a different look on family and become more open-minded.
Which brings me to my next topic of what we discussed. The main issues my group saw in society today is people's abilities to be open-minded. A lot of people in the US are afraid to gain knowledge on different cultures and and the misrepresentation some have towards themselves and others. Knowledge is very important for everyone and to be considerate and respectful to others group of individuals who may not be like you. If you're going to hang and be around someone who is just like you and looks like you. You won't get to gain social and cultural experiences since you feel comfortable to just stick to one group of individuals. When the whole class discussed what they believed the main issues were, I almost didn't realize that we have a lot of issues in society than I thought.
We didn't get to the ethnic identity part of class. But identities are very important to me. As I have a very diverse friend group. I like to educate myself for being a better me and not be biased towards individuals who aren't like me. For a future educator, this skill and task is critical for me to be able to handle. In the future, I hope to learn from those around me and attend events around campus.
I don't see any challenges at the moment for this course. If I do face any, I hope I can be able to say that I don't understand and challenge myself to also step out my comfort zone.
