  • How are White privilege and educational inequality related?
The terms white privilege and educational inequality is related because a lot of white people aren't fully aware of their privilege due to their skin color. Educational inequality is not having the same or equal amount of resources that another schooling system may have. We mostly see this in schools with lower funding vs schools that that have high funding or private schools. Those who attend lower-income schools are usually people who aren't high class and minorities. In the article, "White parents are enabling school segregation" it states that, "Affluent white parents can pay for test prep to get their kids into better charter schools. They can move to the suburbs to get into wealthier districts," (Berlatsky, 2019). This is example of how the two terms are related. White parents are able to pay this and that for a better opportunity for their children while poorer students of colors would have to "use vouchers" or "enter a lottery to attend" (Berlatsky, 2019). Not to mention, most minorities attend schools with people just like them or other minorities. Many white families have options if one school doesn't work out. Based on income, they could find them a nice place for their children to attend. They wouldn't need to enter a lottery to get into a school. Minority schools aren't as likely to get the same materials and resources as a predominantly white school. Mentioned in the "Is Everyone Really Equal" text, I found that people of color are just ultimately penalized due to the tax based policy. Schools are getting their funding from the government based on taxes within the community. So where middle and upper class are and where their schools are, they would receive a good amount of funding. While those in lower income areas would not and would have to compete for a better opportunity for themselves. As in the text said they would "will get a superior education and have less competition in the future workplace" (Sensoy, 2012).
From my understanding, affirmative action is to open up to those who were oppressed and misrepresented in history, giving them the opportunity to have the same/equal amount of opportunities as others. It's like social equality that it's promoting. In the Kimberly Reyes article, he says that it should be about leveling the playing field and getting back the reputations that was limited to many long ago. The main people who are upset with affirmative action is people of color because they believe that something like the affirmative action plan should've been implemented in the first place. Diversity is a big topic and should in involved in classrooms not just a plan. Reyes talked about in the article how he wasn't the only one upset about this plan. My opinion on affirmative action is I support it but I know it may be costly. I agree in the article that someone other than a plan like this should be done. Not trying to restrict what is being taught in classrooms. Students needs to know about racism and privilege in America. The action could also benefit those who aren't giving the same equal amount of job opportunities too. I know many may disrespect and trash the policy but it's better to do something than nothing.
